AI survey generation: where it helps and lies
Typed "build me a loyalty survey" and got 30 near-identical questions? Here is where AI genuinely saves hours, and where it quietly ruins your data.
Askyo has a “generate survey with AI” button, and we deliberately do not make it the headline feature. Here is why: AI is excellent at producing a draft and catastrophically bad at research design.
What AI does well
A draft in 30 seconds. If you need a standard NPS, CSAT or post-purchase survey, AI hands you a workable draft faster than you can open the template library. Eight of ten questions will be reasonable; two will need rewriting.
Rewording and adaptation. “Make this question softer”, “remove the leading tone”, “adapt it for B2B”: an LLM handles this better than most people writing survey copy by hand.
Follow-up ideas. Feed it 30 responses from NPS detractors and it groups the themes and proposes five follow-up questions. That genuinely saves an analyst an hour.
What AI does badly
It does not know your audience. AI generates the internet’s average survey. If you sell SaaS to accountants, the questions will read like they were translated from a generic blog post. Formally correct, contextually beside the point.
It ignores logic. AI gives you a linear list of questions. Ask it to “add logic” and you get naive if-then rules with no grasp of the real branches. You are drawing the graph by hand either way.
It duplicates and leads. The classic failure is two near-identical questions in different words. Or questions that presuppose the answer: “What did you dislike about the product?” instead of something neutral.
How we built it in Askyo
The AI button in the editor generates structure only: a list of questions with types. Not a finished survey, a draft. You see it on the graph, delete what does not belong, drag things around, rewrite.
After generation we always show a checklist of what AI usually misses:
- Check for leading phrasing
- Delete duplicate questions
- Lay out the logic, AI will not guess it
- Adapt it to your tone of voice
- Take the survey yourself and time it honestly
A case: 47 questions down to 11
One of our early beta testers ran AI generation for a market research study and got 47 questions. They launched it to 200 people. Completion rate: 9%.
After editing by hand: 11 questions, graph logic, follow-ups per segment. Completion rate: 64%. The answer quality was dramatically better, because people were no longer abandoning out of spite at question 30.
The lesson: AI is not “press and receive a survey”. It is “press and receive a draft you then cut by a factor of three to five”.
The limits, and why they exist
On Askyo plans:
- Free: 3 generations a month.
- Pro: 50 generations a month.
- Business: unlimited.
That is deliberate. We do not want to encourage generate-launch-never-look-again. Each generation should mean something.
When AI is useless
- Academic research with validated scales (PSS, GAD-7, SF-36). Use the validated instrument; do not let a model reinvent it.
- Legally significant forms: medical intake, consent records. AI will drop mandatory items.
- Research aimed at a very narrow audience: specialist clinicians, professional testers, people who hand-write Astro templates. The model has no context.
In those cases open a blank template and build it by hand. The graph editor will help; generation will only get in the way.
