Online voting

# Create an online vote

A vote is worth exactly as much as people trust it. So what matters here is not the styling but the one-vote-per-device mode: a second attempt from the same browser is rejected, and the person sees your message instead of a fresh form.

An honest tally

## Each vote counts once

### One vote per device

Single-submission mode is a single switch. The browser gets a durable identifier that survives clearing part of its storage, and a repeat submission is rejected on the server too.

### Your message to returning voters

Someone who opens the link again sees neither an empty form nor an error, but your own text: “you have already voted, thank you.” You write the wording.

### Anonymous, no sign-up

Voters need no account, email or phone: open the link, pick an option, submit. The shorter the path, the higher the turnout.

### Link, QR code or widget

Share the link in a chat, print a QR code, or embed the vote in your site with one script tag.

### The tally is automatic

The organiser sees the distribution and the trend in the dashboard, and answers export to CSV or XLSX. Nobody counts ballots by hand.

### Your data stays yours

Export and migration are always available, so there is no vendor lock-in, and a self-hosted build is available when the results have to stay on infrastructure you control.

Where it is used

## What people decide by voting

### Residents’ vote

Yard improvements, choosing a contractor, the order of works. One vote per household instead of paper ballots and door-to-door rounds.

### A choice inside the team

The date of an offsite, a project name, next quarter’s priorities. Anonymity removes the “whatever the boss picked” effect.

### A contest or an award

Audience voting on submitted entries. Single-submission mode answers the most common complaint: “the winner stuffed the ballot”.

### A community poll

What to do with a public space, which route to run, what format of event is wanted. A link and a QR code on the notice board.

### Picking a date or a format

When everyone is free, online or in person, which topic is more interesting. A quick vote instead of a long thread.

### Voting at an event

Best talk, speaker ratings, questions from the room. A QR code on the screen and the result in hand right after the session.

## How to create an online vote

Build a vote in Askyo, switch on one-vote-per-device and read the results.

1. ### Create the vote

Sign up without a card and add a question with options. Any number of options, single or multiple choice.

2. ### Switch on one vote per device

In the publishing settings enable single submission and write the text a returning voter will see.

3. ### Share the link

Send the link to a chat, print a QR code, or embed the vote on your site with one script tag.

4. ### Read the result

The distribution appears in your dashboard as votes arrive, and the result exports to CSV or XLSX.

## How to create an online vote for free

An online vote in Askyo is a form with one question and a list of options, with one-vote-per-device mode switched on. Build the question, publish, share the link, and the tally builds up in your dashboard. Voters need no account, and the free plan is enough for the organiser.

1. Word the question so it can be answered without context. “What should we fix first?” works, “Your thoughts on the office” does not.
2. Keep the list short. Past seven options, consider two rounds: people skim long lists.
3. Turn on one vote per device and write the message returning voters will see.
4. Share the link, print the QR code or embed the vote on your site.

The [multiple-choice voting template](https://askyo.ru/en/templates/voting-choice) comes with the mode already on and the “you have already voted” message written.

## Anonymous voting that stays anonymous

Votes are anonymous by default: no name, email or phone, no sign-up. The organiser sees counts and timestamps, not who picked what. Anonymity usually breaks in the form itself: a required “team” field in a group of twelve, or an open comment written in a recognisable voice. Share one common link rather than personal ones if anonymity matters.

## Contest and photo voting

For a photo contest or a logo pick, use the [image choice question](https://askyo.ru/en/question-types/image-choice): voters see pictures instead of text options. The free plan allows up to 4 image options per question; from Pro there is no limit. Because only the organiser sees the running tally, nobody rallies friends after spotting they are five votes behind.

## A link in the chat or a built-in chat poll

Messengers have built-in polls, and for a quick question they are fine. They only work for people who have an account and are in that chat, and every participant sees the results. A voting link works for anyone who has it, keeps results with the organiser, allows images and follow-up questions, and exports to CSV. The same link can go to several chats at once and the votes land in one place.

## What one vote per device does and does not stop

The browser gets a durable identifier and the server rejects repeat submissions, which stops the ordinary “let me click again”. Incognito mode, another browser or another device count as a new voter. If the stakes are high, add a required field you can check against a list, such as a membership number. Anything that needs verified identity is not a job for a survey builder.

## Closing the vote and sharing results

Close the vote and the link shows your closing message instead of the form. Export the answers to CSV, then publish the result yourself with the number of voters and the closing date. To collect sign-ups for the event where the vote happens, see [event registration](https://askyo.ru/en/event-registration); to put the vote straight onto a page, see the [website survey widget](https://askyo.ru/en/website-survey).

Frequently asked questions

## Questions about voting

Do voters see the results after submitting?

No. The distribution is visible to the organiser in the dashboard; the participant sees your final screen. That is deliberate: a running tally on screen nudges people to join the leader and skews the outcome. If the results should be public, publish them yourself once voting closes.

How do you prevent ballot stuffing?

With single-submission mode. The browser gets a durable identifier that survives clearing part of its storage, and a repeat submission is rejected both on the device and on the server. To be straight about the limits: this stops ordinary repeat submissions, not a motivated attacker. Incognito, another browser or another device counts as a new participant. A legally binding procedure with identity verification is a different class of tool.

Can people vote anonymously?

Yes, and that is the default: no sign-up, email or phone required. If your procedure needs the opposite, add required fields with validation to the vote.

Is voting free?

Yes. The free plan covers up to 5 votes and 150 responses in total, single-submission mode, the shareable link and the website widget. No card needed. If you expect more responses, the paid plans raise the limit.

Can I close voting at a set time?

Yes, voting stops when you close response collection. The link keeps working and shows your closing message instead of the form.

Where are the results stored?

On our servers, with CSV and XLSX export and no vendor lock-in. If your organisation needs the results to stay on its own infrastructure, the self-hosted build covers that.

Can people vote for images instead of text?

Yes. The image choice question shows pictures instead of text options, which is how photo contests and logo picks are run. The free plan allows up to 4 images per question; from the Pro plan there is no limit. One vote per device works exactly as it does for text options.
