# Video answer question

A video answer question records a short clip from the respondent’s camera inside the form. It captures tone, face and context that neither text nor a rating can carry. Candidate intros, usability reactions and customer testimonials are typical uses, where seeing the person is part of the answer.

## Candidate intros, reactions and testimonials

Hiring teams screen dozens of applicants; a one-minute intro tells them more than a cover letter. Product researchers ask users to show the problem on camera. Marketing teams collect testimonials without booking a film crew, then ask for permission separately before using them publicly.

Video is a big ask. Expect fewer answers than for a text question, and say up front why you need a camera.

- Introduce yourself in under a minute: who you are and why this role.
- Show us where you got stuck on the screen, and talk us through it.
- Would you recommend us to a friend? Tell them why, in your own words.

## Length limit and the recording screen on a phone

You set the maximum length in seconds; the default is 60 and the minimum is 5. Recording stops automatically at the limit.

After the browser asks for camera access, the respondent can record, pause, stop and start again until they are happy. The clip is saved as webm or mp4 depending on the device and uploads with visible progress, which matters on mobile data.

In results you see how many clips came in and in which formats, and watch each one in its response.

## Handling video responsibly

A face on camera is personal data in almost every jurisdiction. Tell people who will watch the clip and for how long you keep it, and ask for separate consent if a testimonial might be published.

Test on a phone before you send the survey. Front cameras, permission prompts and mobile data all behave differently from a desktop webcam, and the respondent sees the progress bar during upload, so a short time limit makes the whole experience faster.

Offer a text alternative for people who cannot record right now. You get fewer videos, but you keep the answer.

How long should a video answer be?

Thirty to sixty seconds is plenty for an intro or a reaction, and the default limit of 60 seconds fits that. Longer clips upload slowly on mobile data and take you ages to watch. If you need more, split the prompt into two focused questions.
