# Region picker question

A region picker question asks where the respondent is from using a ready list of regions, with an optional free-text city field underneath. It keeps geography consistent in the results: everyone picks the same spelling of the same region, so answers group cleanly without manual tidying.

## When the region changes what happens next

Delivery cost depends on the area. A retail chain wants feedback grouped by where its branches are. A conference wants to know how many attendees travel from out of town. Asked as a text field, the same place comes back in five spellings; asked as a list, it comes back once.

## The region list, the city field and the phone view

The built-in list covers the 91 regions of Russia. For a survey in any other country, replace it with your own list (US states, UK counties, your sales territories) in the block settings; you can reset to the built-in list later.

The «ask about city» switch is on by default and adds a free-text city field under the region. On a phone the region opens as a scrollable list.

## Getting clean geography out of the answers

Match the list to the decision you will make. If delivery prices come in four zones, a list of four zones is better than fifty states, because every answer maps straight to a price.

Keep the city field on when cities differ inside a region, for example to tell the capital apart from the rest of the area. Turn it off when the region alone is enough, since every extra field costs a few answers.

Add an «Outside the country» item to your custom list if some respondents may live abroad; otherwise they pick a random region to get past the question and pollute the results.

## Region picker question: common questions

Region picker or dropdown: which one should I use?

A dropdown is fine for any short list you type in yourself. The region picker adds the optional city field under the list and stores the answer as «region, city», which is handy when you need both levels. For a survey outside Russia, remember to load your own regions first.
