# Image choice question

An image choice question is a closed question where each option is a picture with a caption. The respondent picks one image, or several if you allow it. It fits anything that is quicker to show than to describe: packaging, logo drafts, interior styles, product colours, screens of an app.

## Design tests and other visual decisions

Ask «Which label do you prefer: minimal or illustrated?» and people imagine different things. Show both labels and they react to the same object. That is the whole case for picture options.

Typical uses are a first pass over logo or packaging drafts, choosing a style for a venue, a children’s survey where reading is hard, and product questions like «Which of these screens have you seen?».

A picture test is not a usability test. It tells you what people like at first sight, not whether the design works in use.

Follow it with a short answer question asking why. The picture tells you which option won; the words tell you what to keep when you redesign it.

## Wording for picture questions

- Which packaging would you notice on the shelf?
- Which of these rooms feels most like your style? Choose up to two.
- Which version of the logo do you prefer?

## Image upload, grid and full-screen view

Each option gets an uploaded image and a caption. Images can be added once the survey draft has been saved. A switch allows several answers.

Respondents see the images in two columns on a phone and three on a wider screen, cropped to 4:3. A full-screen button opens any image in a lightbox, which matters on small screens where details disappear; Esc closes it.

Each picture can send the respondent down its own branch, and in quiz mode an image can be the correct answer.

Results show a bar list by count with the leading option marked, and the CSV export carries the captions.

How do I keep an image test fair?

Use images of the same size, style and quality, and give them neutral captions such as «Option A» and «Option B». If one draft is a polished render and the other a sketch, you are measuring the finish, not the idea.
