# File upload question

A file upload question lets the respondent attach a document to their answer: a CV, a signed contract scan, a log file, a spreadsheet. The file is stored with the response, so you don’t have to ask people to email attachments separately and then match them to form entries by name.

## Forms that fall apart without an attachment

A job application without a CV is half an application. A support request about a broken import is guesswork without the file that failed. Grant applications, supplier onboarding and insurance claims all hinge on a document, and chasing it by email afterwards is where most of them stall.

## Upload prompts that set expectations

- Attach your CV (PDF, up to 5 MB).
- Upload the file that failed to import so we can reproduce the error.
- Add any documents that support your claim: receipts, photos, correspondence.

Name the format and the size limit in the question. People read the prompt before they pick a file, and the error message only after.

## Limits you can set and what the respondent sees

By default the block accepts any file up to 5 MB. You can narrow the accepted formats with a list such as «.pdf,image/\*», change the size limit in megabytes, and switch on multiple files with an optional maximum count.

On a phone the respondent taps a picker button (there is no drag-and-drop zone) and chooses from files, photos or the camera, depending on the device. Each file shows its own progress bar while it uploads. Too large a file gives «The file “x” is larger than N MB»; too many gives «You can upload at most N files».

In results you see file counts, the average per answer and a breakdown by extension. The CSV lists file names in the question’s column.

## Things that go wrong with uploads

Size limits that are too tight. A phone photo of a document easily passes 5 MB, and the respondent then has to find a way to shrink it. If you expect scans or photos, raise the limit before you publish rather than after the first complaints.

Accepting everything when you can only open some formats. If your team works with PDFs, put «.pdf» in the accepted formats list; it saves a round of «can you resend this as a PDF?».

Making the upload required when some people legitimately have nothing to attach. Keep it optional and add a text question for «why no file» if you need to know.
