# Date and time question

A date and time question collects a single moment: a calendar day plus a clock time, picked in one field. It exists as its own type because «the 12th» is not enough for a booking. Nine in the morning and nine at night are different appointments, and splitting them across two questions invites mismatched answers.

## Jobs that need the hour, not only the day

Service bookings are the obvious case: a haircut, a test drive, a consultation call. So are logistics forms where a courier needs an arrival window, and incident reports where the exact moment of the problem matters for matching it against server logs.

If the day alone decides things (a start date, a birthday) stay with the plain date picker. An extra time field is one more thing to get wrong.

## Wording that gets usable timestamps

- When would you like us to call you back?
- When exactly did the payment fail? An approximate time is fine.
- What time will you arrive at the venue?

## Settings, time checks and mobile layout

The editor mirrors the date block: earliest and latest allowed moment and a «future only» switch. With the switch on, a moment that has already gone triggers «That time has already passed, pick a later one», which stops yesterday’s bookings from sneaking in.

Branching works on time distances as well. Units go down to minutes and hours, so you can send anyone who books less than two hours ahead to an «urgent» path and everyone else to the normal confirmation screen.

Respondents on a phone get a date and time picker rather than a free text field. Results show time buckets and the most frequent choice; the CSV carries the value in one column per question.

## Pitfalls with time answers

Time zones are the classic trap. A respondent in Berlin and one in New York both picking «10:00» did not choose the same moment, so if your audience is spread out, say which time zone you mean in the question description, for example «your local time» or «London time».

The second trap is offering any minute of the day when you only have slots on the hour. If you run fixed slots, a single-choice list of slot labels may serve you better than a free time picker, because it cannot produce 10:37.

And keep the wording concrete. «When suits you?» invites a vague answer; «Which day and time should we call?» gets a timestamp you can put straight into a calendar.
