# Date range question

A date range question asks for a period: a start date and an end date answered together. The two pickers are linked, so the end cannot fall before the start. Rentals, leave requests and booking enquiries use it instead of two separate date questions that people fill in the wrong order.

## When a period is the real question

A holiday let wants arrival and departure. HR wants the first and last day of leave. A venue wants the days you need the hall, and a supplier wants the delivery window. Each of these is one fact with two ends, and asking it as two unrelated questions produces answers where the «to» date is earlier than the «from» date.

## Sample date range wording

- Which dates would you like to stay?
- Please give the first and last day of your planned leave.
- Over what period should the deliveries run?

## How the pickers behave and what you set

Two pickers labelled «From» and «To» sit side by side on wider screens and stack one above the other on a narrow phone. Each constrains the other: once a start is chosen, earlier days are unavailable for the end.

You can set overall earliest and latest dates. Missing half the answer shows «Provide both dates», and a start after the end shows «The start cannot be later than the end».

Results show average nights and how the periods are spread; the CSV writes each answer as «start – end».

What you can set

- lower bound
- upper bound

## Common date range mistakes

Forgetting to set bounds. If you rent a cottage only between May and September, enter those as the earliest and latest dates so nobody requests a week in January and waits for a reply that will be a no.

Mixing up nights and days. Hotels count nights, HR counts working days, and the results page shows average nights. State in the question which one you mean, so «3–5 June» reads the same way to you and to the respondent.

Using a range when you need one date. A delivery day, a start date or a birthday is a single date; a range there only doubles the work for the person filling in the form.

Frequently asked questions

## Date range question: common questions

Can respondents give an open-ended period with no end date?

No. The block counts as answered only when both dates are filled. If an open end is a real option, add a yes or no question before it («Do you know your end date?») and show the date range only to people who answer yes.
