# Online judging sheet for competitions

Every judge signs in with their own login, picks an entrant from the list and scores them against your criteria from a phone. Scores reach you the moment they are sent, signed with the judge’s name. No paper score sheets, no retyping, no lost forms.

[Build a judging sheet ](https://app.askyo.ru/build)[Sample criteria](#criteria)

## How to make an online judging sheet

In askyo a judging sheet is a survey. The first question lists the entrants and is marked as the key question; a Matrix question lists the criteria with scores 0, 1, 2, 3. Under Publishing, turn on sign-in by login and password and give every judge their own login. Each judge opens the link, signs in and scores every entrant exactly once, and you see who scored whom and how.

## Where paper score sheets go wrong

Five judges, twenty-two entrants, six criteria each. That is 660 numbers someone retypes into a spreadsheet after the show while everyone waits for the results. One shifted row and the trophy goes to the wrong person.

Paper fails before the tally, too. A judge skips an entrant while taking a call, scores the same act twice because the names look alike, or walks off with the sheet. And when a parent asks why their child came third, all you have is a stack of forms with corrections on them.

An online sheet removes the retyping entirely. Scores land on the server the moment the judge taps Send, each one carries the judge’s name, and nobody can score the same entrant twice.

What it does

## The askyo judging sheet

### A login and password for every judge

The survey opens only for people on your list. There is one link for everyone, and the sign-in decides who is who. A stranger with the link sees only the sign-in screen.

### An entrant list with progress

The judge picks an entrant, scores them and returns to the list. Scored entrants are marked “Rated ✓”, and the count left is always on screen, so nobody gets skipped by accident.

### One score per entrant

The server refuses a second score for the same entrant, even from another phone. Picking that entrant again shows the judge their saved score, read-only.

### Criteria and points in one grid

Criteria are the rows of a matrix and points are the columns. The judge sees the whole sheet at once, like the paper form, and taps instead of writing.

### Every score is signed

Each judge has a description such as their full name. It shows on every response, in the filters and in the export, so “who gave the 1?” takes one click to answer.

### CSV export and webhooks

A CSV with “Participant”, “Login” and the criteria scores opens in Excel. A webhook sends each score the moment it is submitted, for example into a Google Sheet.

### From a phone, nothing to install

The sheet opens in any phone browser from a link or a QR code on the judges’ table. There is no app, and the sign-in stays on the device for the whole event.

### Judges do not see each other’s scores

Each judge sees only their own scores. The full picture is visible to the organisers alone, so the first judge’s opinion does not anchor the rest.

Samples

## Judging criteria for competitions: sample score sheets

Ready-made criteria for the most common contests. Each criterion is scored 0 to 3: 0 not shown, 1 partly, 2 good, 3 excellent. Copy the rows into a matrix and adjust them to your rules.

| Time | Stays within the limit |

### Judging sheet for a science fair or hackathon

| Criterion | What the judges look for |
| ------------ | --------------------------------------------- |
| Problem | A real problem with a clear audience |

| Presentation | Logical pitch that fits the time slot |
| Q\&A | Understands the work and defends choices |
| Originality | A fresh approach, visibly the team’s own work |

## Turning a sample into an askyo sheet

Each table above becomes one Matrix question: the rows are the criteria and the columns are labelled 0, 1, 2, 3. Because a column label starts with a number, the judge’s “Your answers” card shows the score as points, not just ticks. Make the matrix required so an empty sheet cannot be sent.

If you total the results in a spreadsheet, make each criterion its own Number question limited to 0–3, or a Stars question. Each criterion then gets its own column with a number in the export, and the total is one formula. The matrix is quicker for judges; separate questions are quicker for the tally. Pick the side where you need the time more.

## How the sheet works: key question and criteria

The heart of a judging sheet is the key question: a single-choice question whose options are the entrants. Mark it as the key question in the question settings and the rules change. Every judge answers each option exactly once, and the list turns into a checklist with “Rated ✓” marks.

Entrants can be shown as a list, a dropdown, cards or images. A card holds a name and a caption, for example “Leo Brown, contemporary solo”. Images suit art and photography contests: the judge picks the work itself rather than a name.

Put the key question first. If the survey has branches, the builder checks that no branch can reach the end without passing it and will not publish a sheet with that gap. Below it, add the criteria matrix and, if you like, a “Judge’s comment” field.

## Collecting the final scores

Scores appear under Responses as judges send them. Each response shows the judge and the entrant. Filter by entrant to see every judge’s score for one act; group by judge to see who has not finished yet.

For the final results, export the responses to CSV: the file has “Participant” (the judge’s name), “Login”, the entrant and the criteria scores. A pivot table in Excel or Google Sheets turns that into totals, averages and places in a couple of minutes. To fill a sheet live during the event, connect a webhook: every score arrives with the judge and the entrant right after it is sent.

askyo does not calculate totals or rankings itself; the spreadsheet does. What it removes is the retyping: the numbers come straight from the judges.

Use cases

## Which contests it fits

Anywhere several experts score several entrants against the same criteria.

- ### Schools and clubs

Recitation, art, science projects, talent shows. Teachers score from their phones in the hall, and the results are ready when the last act finishes. For an audience vote, run a separate [online poll](https://askyo.ru/en/voting).

- ### Festivals and arts competitions

Singing, dance, theatre, photography. Dozens of acts and several categories: each category gets its own sheet with its own criteria. Give a judge the same login and password in every sheet they sit on so there is nothing to mix up.

- ### Pitch days and hackathons

Demo days, student project defences, startup pitches. Experts score teams on the problem, the solution and the pitch, and the organiser sees disagreements between judges before announcing winners.

- ### Panels and expert reviews

Award shortlists, candidate panels, internal best-practice selection. It is the same non-anonymous survey: each expert signs in under their own name, and the panel’s decision rests on signed scores.

## Good to know before the event

So there are no surprises on the day, here is what the askyo judging sheet does not do today.

- Sign-in by login and password and the key question come with the Pro plan and above. They are not on the free plan.
- The sheet works only on the survey page, opened by link or QR code. An embedded widget on your site will not show a survey that needs sign-in.
- A judge cannot edit a score after sending it. If a judge makes a mistake, the organiser deletes that response.
- Totals, averages and places are calculated in a spreadsheet after export, not in the dashboard.
- A survey has one key question. For several categories, make one sheet per category.
- One sheet holds up to 500 judges or other signed-in participants, which is plenty for a contest.

## How to make an online judging sheet in 5 steps

From an empty survey to a link for your judges. Requires the Pro plan.

1. ### List the entrants

Create a survey at app.askyo.ru/build and start with a single-choice question whose options are the entrants. In the question settings, turn on “Key question”.

2. ### Add the criteria

Add a Matrix question: rows are the criteria, columns are labelled 0, 1, 2, 3. Make it required. You can copy criteria from the samples on this page.

3. ### Add your judges

Open Publishing → Access, choose “By login and password” and add each judge with a login, a password and their full name as the description.

4. ### Publish and hand out access

Press Publish, print the QR code for the judges’ table and give each judge their login and password. Ask everyone to sign in before the first act.

5. ### Collect the results

Watch scores arrive under Responses and filter by entrant or judge. After the event, export to CSV and work out totals and places in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

## Judging sheet FAQ

How do I make an online judging sheet?

Build a survey with the entrant list as the first question, marked as the key question, and a criteria matrix with points after it. Under Publishing → Access, turn on sign-in by login and password and add your judges. Each judge signs in from the shared link and scores every entrant once.

Is there a free option?

Sign-in by login and password and the key question come with the Pro plan and above. On the free plan you can still build a scoring form, but responses are anonymous and one judge could score the same entrant more than once.

How do judges get access?

You add each judge with a login and password to the survey’s participant list. Everyone uses the same link: the judge opens it, signs in and sees the list of entrants. Without a password the link opens only the sign-in screen.

Can a judge change a score?

No. A judge scores each entrant once, and the server rejects a second score for the same entrant. Picking that entrant again shows the saved score read-only. If a score was entered by mistake, the organiser deletes the response and the judge can score again.

Does askyo calculate totals and rankings?

No, a spreadsheet does. Export to CSV or send scores to a Google Sheet by webhook: the data has the judge, the entrant and the criteria scores. For spreadsheet totals it is easiest when each criterion is a separate Number question with its own column.

Can judges see each other’s scores?

No. A judge sees only their own scores, read-only after sending. The complete set of scores is visible to the survey’s organisers in the dashboard.

Can judges score from a phone?

Yes. The sheet opens in any phone browser, with nothing to install. Put a QR code on the judges’ table: the judge scans it, signs in once, and the sign-in stays on the device for the whole event.

## Have the judging sheet ready for your next contest

Entrants, criteria and judges take about half an hour to set up. Sample criteria are above.
