# Google Forms alternative: when to switch and when not to

Google Forms is free and everyone knows it. This page compares it with Askyo on facts you can check, shows where Google is still the better tool, and lists what Askyo cannot do. We build Askyo, so we are biased: keep that in mind and check the vendors’ docs.

## The short answer

### Stay on Google Forms

If the form is internal, everyone already lives in Google Workspace, you want responses straight in a Google Sheet, and email notifications matter. Free and familiar is hard to beat.

### Switch to Askyo

If the logic has outgrown “go to section based on answer”, if the form should feel native on your website instead of an iframe, if you need quizzes, tests and surveys in one place, or if the data must live on servers you run yourself.

### Look elsewhere

If you need to pay by card from outside Russia today, heavy email automation, or a full LMS with gradebooks. Askyo does none of those yet.

## Why people look for a Google Forms alternative

Most teams outgrow Google Forms in one of three ways. The logic gets complicated: a survey with three paths and a dozen conditions becomes a tangle of sections that nobody wants to maintain. The form has to live on the company website, and an iframe with Google styling looks like what it is. Or the job is no longer a form at all: a lead-generation quiz, a graded test, a vote.

The fourth reason is control over data. Some organizations cannot put customer or employee responses into a third-party cloud at all, and a hosted form builder of any brand is off the table for them.

## Where your data lives

Be clear about hosting before you switch. Askyo’s cloud runs in Russia, on Yandex Cloud. For many teams outside Russia that is not what their privacy policy promises, and we would rather say so here than have you discover it later.

If your data has to stay in your own region or on your own hardware, use the self-hosted build: Askyo runs on your servers, and responses never touch ours. This is not legal advice; check your obligations with whoever owns privacy in your organization.

- Cloud: servers in Russia, Yandex Cloud.
- Self-hosted: your servers, your jurisdiction, licensed separately (see [pricing](https://askyo.ru/en/pricing)).
- A consent block with a link to your privacy policy is available in every form.

## Where Askyo does better

Logic. Google Forms branches by jumping to a section. In Askyo, the survey is a diagram on a graph editor: you see which answer leads where, where the paths split and which ending each person reaches. On a 30-question survey with three scenarios, the difference is obvious. More in [why we chose a graph](https://askyo.ru/en/blog/why-graph-logic).

Your website. The Askyo widget is one script line rendered in a Shadow DOM, so it looks like part of your page and does not drag in an iframe. It works on WordPress, Webflow and plain HTML; see the [website survey](https://askyo.ru/en/website-survey) page.

Range. There are 43 question types, including scales, matrices, ranking, NPS, signature, voice recording and constant sum, plus [lead quizzes](https://askyo.ru/en/quiz), [graded tests](https://askyo.ru/en/test-maker) and [voting](https://askyo.ru/en/voting) in the same tool. Four display modes: list, one question per screen, pages and chat.

## What Askyo cannot do (and where Google is easier)

An honest list, so you decide before moving rather than after.

- No import from Google Forms. You rebuild the form (steps below), and old responses stay in Google.
- No email notifications, to you or to respondents. Use a webhook, Make, Zapier or Telegram from the Pro plan.
- The free plan is capped at 5 surveys and up to 150 responses. Google Forms has no such cap.
- A “made with Askyo” line sits under every form; removing it requires the Enterprise plan.
- Co-editing starts on the Team plan. In Google Forms, adding a collaborator is free.
- Tests have no shuffling, no timer and no per-answer feedback. Google Forms quizzes have shuffling and feedback.
- No international card checkout yet: paid plans on the English site go through a request form.

## How to move a form from Google Forms by hand

There is no automatic import, but a 15–20 question form takes about 10–15 minutes to rebuild. Old responses stay in your Google Sheet.

1. ### Copy the questions out of Google Forms

Open the form in edit mode and copy the question texts and answer options into any text document.

2. ### Let Yo draft the survey

Create a survey in Askyo and paste the list into the chat with Yo, the builder’s AI assistant. It builds the questions with matching answer types and shows every change before applying it.

3. ### Rebuild the logic

Google’s section jumps become branches on the graph: connect a question to the block a person should reach for a given answer.

4. ### Re-enter the answer key for tests

Turn on quiz mode and mark the correct answers and points again. The Google answer key does not carry over.

5. ### Keep the old responses

Download the responses from Google and store the spreadsheet separately. Old responses cannot be loaded into Askyo.

6. ### Swap the form on your site

Replace the Google iframe with the Askyo widget, update links in emails and send a test response to check it arrives.

Frequently asked questions

## Google Forms alternative FAQ

What is the best free alternative to Google Forms?

It depends on what Google Forms is missing for you. For complex branching, a native website embed and quizzes in one tool, Askyo has a free plan with 5 surveys and up to 150 responses. If you just need unlimited free responses and email alerts, Google Forms itself is hard to beat.

Can I import my Google Forms into Askyo?

No, there is no import. A 15–20 question form takes about 10–15 minutes to rebuild by hand: copy the questions, paste them into a chat with Yo, the AI assistant, then check types and logic. Old responses stay in your Google Sheet.

Is Askyo GDPR-compliant?

We do not make that claim. Askyo’s cloud runs in Russia, so if GDPR or a similar law applies to you, check with your privacy lead whether that works, or use the self-hosted build on your own servers in your own jurisdiction.

Does Askyo send email notifications like Google Forms?

No. Askyo does not send email. From the Pro plan, each response can go to a webhook, Make, Zapier or Telegram, and from there you can trigger an email with your own tools.

How much does Askyo cost compared with Google Forms?

Google Forms is free. Askyo has a permanent free plan with 5 surveys and up to 150 responses; paid plans start at 1,490 ₽ a month for Pro. International card checkout is not live yet, so paid plans on the English site are arranged through the request form on the pricing page.
